Daffodils, Hodags and Grace

Sister Gordon left some beautiful daffodils with us as she came for a visit with Sister Johnson. We don't see many flowers like these because, apparently, the deer eat them.
Notice the missionary issue vase!
This was pasty making week again. We volunteered 20 hours over three days to prepare 700+ pastys for sale. It is a good and worthwhile experience and the others with whom we work are very appreciative of the help. They are already asking if we can stay and help even after we are released. They are also certain that when we return we are going to start a pasty making business in Utah because we now know all of the secrets involved. We also received five free pastys for our work. This month we gave two to Bob Peters for him and his daughter Wendy who was visiting for the week-end.
We are considering hosting a "Meet the Mormons" night if the seniors are interested. This would be at the Senior center. We are thinking Romney's eventual nomination should give us an opportunity to dispel myths surrounding the Mormons and show a positive Christian side to the church while offering the opportunity to hear more. We'll keep you posted.
Even though Richard Matson, a less active priest and the 40 year old son of the 1st counselor, called and said we would have to postpone our visit this week due to illness; he called back later in the week all excited because a mass on his liver was gone, his BP is totally normal and all other tests are nominal. This after a priesthood blessing we gave almost two months ago. I told him, "Richard, it looks like the Lord has something planned for you!" We will be following up later this week.
Finally on Saturday we visited and inspected the missionary apartment in Rhinelander. These seem to be two quiet and dedicated Elders. We were there earlier in the day of their scheduled baptism. They were very excited. This baptism came about because a less active husband felt strongly the need to have his wife taught and hopefully baptized. He sent a referral card in on himself. (where were his home teachers?) The missionaries came, taught them and, now, four months later her husband has baptized her. More evidence of the power of the Holy Ghost working in the lives of the members. In this reality we place our faith and hope.
Rhinelander, WI is home to the Hodag. A fearsome monster of dubious distinction. "Discovered" in the 1890s it reportedly had "the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur and a long tail with spears at the end". Wikipedia has more.

The High School sports teams are the Hodags...what kind of cheer can you make with that mascot? Speaking of unusual school names we also have the Ishpeming H. S. Hematites in this area. Hematite is an iron ore so you could at least make references to "crushing" your opponents.
Elder Smith gave a beautiful, intelligent talk on grace in church on Sunday using, in part, the Brad Wilcox talk on grace we had given him. In his talk Br. Wilcox quoted 2 Corinthians 12:9 where Paul asks for relief from his affliction, "My grace is sufficient for thee..." was the Lord's answer. The same answer for all of us, His children. Br. Wilcox continues, "-sufficient to cover us, sufficient to transform us and sufficient to help us as long as that transformation process takes." Elder Smith observed that our response to this incomprehensible gift should be gratitude. Gratitude expressed through the keeping of His commandments and especially those that express and model the love that God has for us pursuant to His command to "...love one another, as I have loved you." (John 15:12) It just fills your heart, doesn't it!
Finally I have included a picture of an antique changing booth used primarily these days by superheroes. Notice the soon to be antique mail collection container near to the changing booth. You thought we were kidding about moving back in time by coming here to the U.P.

Feeling blessed to be your parent. friend and/or sibling,

Elder and Sister Johnson
